Dear Kari, . . . In your posting today you shared hard-won wisdom with us. Thank you. It takes many of us so long to learn that "to love others as you love yourself" means that we must truly begin by loving ourselves.
I'm so glad to learn that you are taking care of your own needs and having fun again.
Peace to you in your journey.
This column was the perfect thing for me to read this week as it is a week in which I am doing a lot of things for other people. But you really hit home when you talked about the example you're setting for your daughters. I have a 17-year-old daughter, and the balance between self and others is hard to both find and model when parenting a teen. You've given me much to consider.
I like to take time for myself by cooking. It fills my senses as well as feeding me, especially if I have a glass of wine while cooking!
"What I have learned is that I am the only person who can choose to make me happy."
Yes!
Beautifully told Kari. Congratulations on getting your writing out there and for taking the time to do it!
I'll never forget the time I met a friend for lunch – she'd come straight from having a massage. "You gotta take care of yourself, nobody's going to do it for you!" she said!
Kari dear I am very happy to read about your balanced approach. You are wisely giving time in taking care of others and yourself. Me too learned the same lesson after leading a very long part of my life in just taking care of others and ignoring myself.
Kari this is just wonderful, thank you. I choose to be the one to make myself happy too! I'm an early riser now thanks to the baby years. Now that the babies are teenagers, I get this early morning time for "me" time. On the other hand, my kids now know that any request from me post 9:30pm might be met with impatience or incompetence or both!
Great post – I also struggled when I was first married with feeling guilty and selfish putting myself first. I lost my sense of who I was and like you came to understand that by taking care of myself, I could be who I was meant to be and that would be better for all around me.
